NC State Capitol Building

Located on Union Square in downtown Raleigh, the North Carolina State Capitol Building is one of the oldest state capitols in the United States. It is also one of the neoclassical structures in the United States. It is three stories tall and has a copper dome. It is one of the largest state capitols in the nation and is classified as a Raleigh Historic Landmark.

The building was constructed in 1840. Many of its features are attributed to Scottish-born architect David Paton. He was also the supervising architect and responsible for most of the building’s features.

The North Carolina State Capitol was constructed of local stone. The ents (or entrances) feature projecting porticos of Doric columns. The building also contains a replica of the Antonio Canova statue of George Washington.
